Single seater winner Jonathan Engström joins NXT Gen Cup

Single seater and karting winner Jonathan Engström is going to join the NXT Gen Cup grid in 2023, the world's first 100% electric junior touring car cup.

"I'm really excited to take on this brand new and electrified journey in the NXT Gen Cup where I have high ambitions in terms of results," said Jonathan Engström.

The 18-year-old Swede, who is son to former STCC race winner Tomas Engström, finished third overall in Formula Nordic this year and claimed the 2020 MKR series Sweden - Senior 125 karting title.

"Front-wheel drive electric cars like the NXT LRT1 is completely new to me but I feel confident that I can adapt quickly," said Jonathan Engström.

"I've visited the NXT Gen Cup headquarters and that inspired me thoroughly ahead of 2023, the car and the championship setup looks really impressive. While I have no illusions that it will be easy, my goal for 2023 is to break into the top fight of the championship."

NXT Gen Cup will host its inaugural season in 2023 and run alongside the all-electric STCC.

The LRT NXT1 race car is based on the electric MINI Cooper SE road car that has been purpose-built for racing by Lestrup Racing Team, the founders of NXT Gen Cup.

The car features a 30kWh battery with an electric, liquid cooled motor which produces 230hp pending circuit - including push-to-pass functionality. The front-wheel drive cars can run 20-minute races at full pace thanks to comprehensive development by NXT Gen Cup in a wide array of conditions.
