ABB E-mobility official charging partner of NXT Gen Cup
ABB E-mobility’s Terra DC wallboxes have been selected to power the completion of the world’s first 100 percent electric junior touring car cup, the NXT Gen Cup.
The NXT Gen Cup season launch and test day is being held today at Gelleråsen, just outside of Karlskoga, Sweden, with the first official round taking place in Falkenberg on July 8-9 and then continuing alongside the Scandinavian Touring Car Championship (STCC).
The revolutionary series will see junior drivers aged between 14-25 compete across six race weekends in Sweden and Germany, with fully electric race cars based on the standard MINI Cooper SE. In addition to being crowned winner of the world's first all-electric junior racing championship and the official Swedish Junior Champion, they will also compete for a prize package of financial support to compete in the STCC in 2024.
"The junior drivers competing in the NXT Gen Cup will be important ambassadors for future electric car drivers. For us, the championship is about more than just racing, we are building an academy for young talents to develop their racing careers, and gain knowledge about everything from media and sponsor relations, to financing and racing car technology," said Fredrik Lestrup, co-founder of NXT Gen Cup.
The racing cars will be charged using portable versions of ABB E-mobility’s Terra DC wallbox, which provides competitors with enough electricity to run several races in one day. As a world leader in electric vehicle charging infrastructure, ABB E-mobility, has been providing the market with smart and safe charging solutions for over ten years.
"We are proud to help the NXT Gen Cup with the charging infrastructure which is crucial for enabling the competition of electric race cars. Our goal is to accelerate the electrification of the transport sector and we therefore need to work at driving awareness and adoption across all parts of society. Reaching young people and people interested in motorsport is an important piece of the puzzle if we are to create a truly sustainable transport future,” said Eva Kvist Östgren, Head of ABB E-mobility in Sweden.
Both ABB E-mobility and the NXT Gen Cup work toward a sustainable and emission-free transport sector, with motorsport making an important and public contribution to this goal.
This is not ABB E-mobility’s only involvement in motorsport; it is also the Official Charging Partner for the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship. Together with engineers from motorsport's governing body, the FIA, and Formula E, ABB E-mobility developed a compact, reliable and safe solution for charging the new Gen3 cars before race day and between sessions. Each charger can deliver a maximum power of 160kW and is able to charge two vehicles with 80kW of power simultaneously. This means that each race team benefits from a ‘double charging’ capacity from one unit, significantly reducing the charger footprint and decreasing transportation emissions, as there is no longer a need for one unit per car.
Ends.
