NXT Gen Cup makes historic world premiere at Falkenberg this weekend with 18 juniors
NXT Gen Cup will make its historic world premiere this weekend at Falkenberg in Sweden – marking the start of the world's first 100% electric junior touring car cup.
A field of 18 junior talents from Sweden, Denmark, Czechia, Netherlands, UK, and USA will fight for the first-ever NXT Gen Cup victories on the fastest circuit in Sweden.
”This is a proud moment for us all after the countless hours in preparations and the start of a historic new chapter in sustainable electric junior motorsport,” said Fredrik Lestrup, founder of NXT Gen Cup.
“We have got a very strong NXT Gen Cup field of 18 talented drivers from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences, but all with a common passion for motorsport and a hunger to win. This is the first step in creating a viable career ladder in electric racing and we are more than ready to push the boundaries of traditional motorsport – starting this weekend!”
NXT Gen Cup introduces world class electric junior racing through a sustainable setup and a comprehensive educational programme for all entered junior drivers.
The pre-season has seen the drivers take part in courses of sponsor relations, economics, PR and media relations, social media and more – creating the foundation needed for a future professional racing career.
Last month saw the field getting together on track for the first time during an ultra-competitive official pre-season test at Gelleråsen Arena in Sweden.
A mere 63 thousand of a second separated Elias Adestam and Enzo Hallman at the top, with the top eight drivers covered within seven tenths of a second.
The young talents will race the all-new LRT NXT1 race cars in NXT Gen Cup, cars which are based on the MINI Cooper SE road car model – featuring a 30kWh battery and 230hp with push-to-pass functionality.
The cars, which run on Hankook Ventus TD tyres, are charged in-between track sessions by ABB E-mobility, the official charging partner to NXT Gen Cup.
The NXT Gen Cup field will be headed by the MINI Electric Pacesetter throughout the 2023 season, which made its debut as the official Safety Car for the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship. The Pacesetter will be driven by two female marshals of the Falkenberg circuit organisation during the season premiere.
The race weekend starts on Saturday with a test session and qualifying, which determines the grid for Race 1 on Sunday. The grid for Race 2 is determined by reversing the top eight drivers of the Race 1 result.
Qualifying and both races are broadcast LIVE on YouTube with expert commentary from NXT Gen Cup commentator Daan Pepels – who will also provide expert insight together with series founder Fredrik Lestrup during the NXT Gen Cup Paddock Walk – starting Friday evening.
