NXT Gen Cup pushes ahead with production of 20 new race cars

NXT Gen Cup is proceeding according to plan with production of 20 brand new LRT NXT1 race cars, based on the electric MINI Cooper SE road car. The cars will be completed ahead of the upcoming 2023 season when NXT Gen Cup becomes the world's first 100% electric junior touring car cup.

"We received 20 new body shells in October last year from the MINI plant in Oxford UK and we are working at full capacity to turn these into the LRT NXT1 race cars," said Fredrik Lestrup, co-founder of NXT Gen Cup.

The production phase follows an extensive engineering and testing process with the LRT NXT1 prototype by the NXT Gen Cup development team, a process which is still ongoing.

The development team has recently been in Spain, adding further vital development kilometres to the project.

"The development phase is focussed on a wide array of areas such as battery performance under intense race conditions, tyre performance and general durability," said Fredrik Lestrup.

"We have put thousands of kilometres on the prototypes, work that will continue alongside the production phase, as well as during the racing season to continuously improve the cars."

Production of the LRT NXT1 race cars are taking place at the Lestrup Racing Team facilities in Sweden.

"We took delivery of 60 pallets of parts for the race cars at the end of last year and it's tough but rewarding work for the NXT Gen Cup team and our partners to put all this together,” said Fredrik Lestrup.

"While we’re breaking new ground as a company previously focussed only on racing cars, we have expanded and made key recruitments which have enabled us to move forward according to plan. The work is thoroughly inspiring, and we have an exciting spring ahead of our championship debut this summer!”

The LRT NXT1 features a 30kWh battery with an electric, liquid cooled motor which produces 230hp pending circuit - including push-to-pass functionality.

The front-wheel drive cars can run 20-minute races at full pace thanks to comprehensive development by NXT Gen Cup in a wide array of conditions.

The 2023 NXT Gen Cup season starts July 8-9 at Falkenberg, Sweden. Further information is available here.
