The 2024 NXT Gen Cup statistics deep dive
The second NXT Gen Cup season saw a tough from the first race to the last, with the title race going right down to the season finale.
2024 saw seven different podium finishes and plenty of thrilling fights on track. But how did we get here? Join us for a deep dive into the statistics.
The young talents of 2024 NXT Gen Cup completed a total of 37 000 kilometers and close to 6 000 laps together in testing, qualifying and races throughout the four race weekends behind the wheel of their all-electric LRT NXT1 race cars.
28 drivers from eight different countries, including Sweden, Denmark, Netherlands, Czechia, Scotland, Germany, Latvia and Norway, raced for the NXT Gen Cup honours this year.
The closest victory margin was a sensational 0.037 seconds (Stiefelhagen/Groot, Norisring R1) and no less than three races had a margin of less than a tenth of a second and 77% of the races had a victory margin of less than a second!
The biggest victory margin was 2.7 seconds (Nielsen, Norisring R2) for an average total margin of just 0.8 seconds.
Lukas Stiefelhagen took command initially in the Norisring season opener, but it was not for long until Calvin de Groot took over the lead that he was to keep throughout the season.
Danish racer Victor Nielsen was the sole driver able to challenge the Dutch driver over the season and gained impressively in the final part of the season. The charge was however not enough and Nielsen ended up ten points behind champion Groot.
The average finish statistics further underlines the dominance of the leading duo of Calvin de Groot and Victor Nielsen.
Calvin de Groot was able to finish 2.1 on average while Victor Nielsen was just 0.3 positions behind.
There is a sizeable gap to third-placed Enzo Hallman who finished 3.4 on average and an even bigger gap to Lukas Stiefelhagen, who finished fourth with an average of 4.8.
The number of wins makes it even more clear that Calvin de Groot and Victor Nielsen were in a league of their own with six race wins each, meaning that they won all but one race throughout the 2024 season.
Lukas Stiefelhagen was the only other driver who managed to beat the leading duo with a victory in the Norisring opener, a performance which unfortunately then dropped considerably for the Dutchman as the season progressed.
While two drivers dominated the race wins, there were a total of seven drivers stepping onto the podium throughout the 2024 season. Champion Calvin de Groot missed out on the podium just two times on the way to his impressive title.
Vice-champion Victor Nielsen was just one podium finish behind in second place, while Enzo Hallman was able to turn around modest average qualifying result, more on that further down, to step onto the podium nine times.
Vice-champion Victor Nielsen was the 2024 king of race pace, having claimed the fastest lap in close to half of this year’s races.
Enzo Hallman once again proves his race pace by claiming three fastest laps while champion Calvin de Groot only managed one fastest lap this year.
As we turn our attention to qualifying, it was once again close between the top two drivers of Calvin de Groot and Victor Nielsen who claimed two poles each.
Lukas Stiefelhagen and the impressive debutant Linus Stjernelund were the only other two drivers starting from the front of the field this year.
Qualifying is not only critical in terms of grid position, but also for the championship as it awards points, four for pole, two for second and one for third.
Champion Calvin de Groot added no less than 16 points to his title run thanks to the qualifying points while Victor Nielsen scored three points less with a total of 13.
Interesting to note is that Lukas Stiefelhagen, who finished fourth overall, claimed seven qualifying points while Enzo Hallman , who finished third overall, claimed no qualifying points at all.
And if we look even closer into the qualifying statistics, Calvin de Groot’s excellent performance shines through with an average qualifying result of 1.7.
Vice champion Victor Nielsen could not quite match his title rival with an average of 2.2.
Perhaps the most impressive qualifying result is the one of youngster Linus Stjernelund who had the third best qualifying average, despite finishing sixth overall in the standings. The Swede qualified 3.8 on average, beating both Lukas Stiefelhagen (4.5) and Enzo Hallman (5.0).
