NXT Gen Cup heads to legendary Nürburgring together with DTM
The 100% electric NXT Gen Cup heads to the legendary Nürburgring in Germany for the third race weekend of 2023, racing alongside one of the world’s most prestigious championships, the DTM.
The Nürburgring weekend is a back-to-back race, with the NXT Gen Cup field coming from an eventful round two at Oschersleben last weekend.
”The Oschersleben race weekend continued the great start to the first-ever season of NXT Gen Cup. It was great to see the junior talents and the all-new LRT NXT 1 race cars perform on a big international circuit and gain valuable experience of racing in the wet,” said Fredrik Lestrup, founder of NXT Gen Cup.
”To continue the international adventure, and race on one of the most classic tracks in the world with the Nürburgring, will be another great challenge for our drivers and cars. Racing along with the iconic DTM will both be motivating and educational for our junior drivers moving forward in their careers."
Round two of the all-electric junior championship saw a repeat of winners from the world premiere at Falkenberg in Sweden earlier this summer, as both Elias Adestam and USA-born Ellis Spiezia claimed their second victories of the season.
The young American star now holds a solid 32 points lead in the championship over Adestam coming into the DTM race weekend at Nürburgring.
Linus Granfors salvaged points from a challenging weekend at Oschersleben, leading Race 1 as his car coming to a halt with issues, before climbing 10 positions from a back row start in Race 2. The Swedish racer holds third in the championship.
Alexander Gustafsson, making his NXT Gen Cup and racing debut after having previously raced in cross cars, secured a solid points haul at Oschersleben with two fifth place finished and climbed to fourth in the standings.
The best female driver at Oschersleben was Siri Hökfelt, who claimed tenth in Race 1 and eleventh in Race 2 to hold eleventh in the drivers’ championship.
17-year-old German karter Mats Overhoff, along with Dutch racer Benet Boer, will make their debut in the NXT Gen Cup at Nürburgring, bringing the field to a total of 18 all-electric MINI Cooper SE race cars this weekend.
The young talents races the 100% electric LRT NXT1 race cars in NXT Gen Cup, cars which are based on the MINI Cooper SE road car model – featuring a 30kWh battery and 230hp with push-to-pass functionality.
The cars, which run on Hankook Ventus TD tyres, are charged in-between track sessions by ABB E-mobility, the official charging partner to NXT Gen Cup.
The NXT Gen Cup field is headed by the MINI Electric Pacesetter throughout the 2023 season, which made its debut as the official Safety Car for the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship.
The NXT Gen Cup action at Nürburgring starts on Saturday with testing and qualifying, followed by two races on Sunday. Every session is broadcast LIVE on the NXT Gen Cup YouTube channel.
